Soul Kitchen Trattoria

2010_06_26 Soul Kitchen 046a

“Wow, you two are really having a massive breakfast, don’t you?”
Giggly laughed. “Are we?”
“Hope you enjoyed your day! Great to see you guys so happy and enjoying the food here.”
“Oh yes, the food is prepared with love and care.”

This is the exact conversation that we have with Michelle from Soul Kitchen. We went back for breakfast the other day, when everyone was working we were enjoying our ‘massive’ breakfast down there. It was another quality time that we spent together.

Anyway, when you’re just like ‘sotong’ (squid) where people claims it blur, that means you need something to kick start your morning, whether be it at work or off work. I was one of that, that needed a cup of strong coffee to kick start my day. Once, a sip, the ideas could just flow freely into your mind and it will start thinking how to get things done for the day, and so on.

Before I could think thru what to have for the morning, I just want a Long Black Coffee. And with that, whatever it’s in query, will be answered.

Needless to say, having healthy breakfast for a day is something every parent will tell their children. And we were told that too when we were young. So, why would we thrifty about what we want to have, right?
Such, I have Scrambled Egg with Mushroom (RM6-00), which consists of one slice of bread that cut into half, and tomato.

2010_09_13 Soul Kitchen 020a

Hubby has Tramezzini Tuna (Grilled Sandwich – RM10-00) for his breakfast. It was a simple snack in many European countries, well, at least that’s what we were told.

Next, Muesli on Papaya (RM9-00), added honey on it, that makes the entire thing so delicious.

So, all the above look massive to you?? If you’re looking for some healthy bite for the morning, Soul Kitchen Trattoria is the place for you.

Cassis Restaurant

2010_09_16 Cassis 061a 2010_09_16 Cassis 043a

Sometimes having a half dozen of fresh oysters for lunch is rather luxury and indulges. But then if we think positively, take it as it’s a reward after a hard work, or a reward after of difficult job or a date with your love one, probably you will think that’s not that luxury after all.

Well, I gotta think about that when I foot the bill for this splendid lunch for my loved one and myself. It’s the time that we spent together and the ‘project’ that we work together. I always tell my girlfriends or even my sisters, once in awhile, you gotta foot the bill, doesn’t mean you pay for that it means you’re stronger than the man. It’s something that you’re pampering him after a hard day work in the office or something else. It’s a way of compromising each other short fall or strengths in the day to day life or rather our marriage.

Coming another year, would be our 10th anniversary. I do have a wild idea, but honestly I don’t think I could do it all by myself without him sponsoring me. But whatever it is, it’s the 10 years that we both that had gone thru, whether the sweet moments, the tears, the downfall, the quarrel or mourning moments.

Lately we both have been dragged down by the project that we are working on, that’s something that is once in a life time you will face it. When you could see the entire object is nearly complete it’s finishing stage, you will tend to be very release and happy about the hard work and the time, and the thought that you’d spent on it.

Saying about that… I know many couples are happy hanging on with such projects and such work that husband and wife that could work on together. Of course, no one would want to have dictated another for what they want. The more you learn, you will agree with me that it’s a truly a special knowledge and experience to gain. It has never been easy to learn to compromise, to understand, and to respect to another person whom is brought up in a different way with you.

Cassis… a place where I made known from CK’s post, a place we both will know we will definitely step foot in it whether spontaneously or plan. No doubt this place is rather cozy and it’s a nice place for friends that enjoying food could hang out together. Though, it’s a lunch date that we had, whether it’s romantic or not, I guess it’s all from the heart.

Manila Place Restaurant

2010_08_28 Manila Place 002a

Some people said the world is so small, wherever you go, you will tend to bump into somebody that you know. Well, I truly agreed with that… cuz, while I was having my meal in the new Manila Place few weekends ago, I actually bump into Christopher Choong whom is the famous photographer for many wedding events in Penang. First thought was like, the world is so small. Second thought was hey, am meeting somebody could give me some good tips on photographing.

It was just merely coincident, while I was shooting some food on my table. Chris was suggesting why not I use the lens that he has, and flick second, he just handed me his lens and I’d just put it on and try. And the effect of the outcome was superb. That even makes me more eager to have one for myself.

From the conversation, I realized we have actually met once in one of my colleague’s wedding over in Butterworth. That time I was not a blogger and not even interested in taking photograph. But always admire how people take nice photo shoots. Of course, the surrounding lighting, the lens capability and the tools is important to make one interesting and beautiful.

Well… Manila Place has shifted from their first original lot to the new wing of Gurney Plaza mall. The prior lot has now make way for Chicago Ribs, and what Manila Place now located is just next to Dragon-I Restaurant. Thought many may think will that pull away their customers? I would strongly comment that it will not, as old customers like us, are anxious to dine in their new outlet, cuz, the new outlet is giving us the new feeling, the new experience.

Don’t believe me?? In fact the food range has improved a lot, where you could choose more than what you expected. And I could see many are return customers to the outlet, I bet they were as anxious as me too. Also it has bigger space to cater more customers too… a cozy corner for customers to wait for their seating, and of course the variety of magazines to read while waiting.

Bee See Heong 美時香餐室

It’s been awhile I didn’t visit this place, last weekend two couples were sat down at this place and have tasted their signature dishes. What make us very pleasant is our friend is happy with the food there.

Now that we got to go out together and shopping together, not because of anything but we shared the same objective right now. At times, am thinking isn’t this is like a beauty affair? At times we both pairs were like in such a dilemma that should we do this or that. Will that make it nice and comfort… and also is this practical if we fix this and that… and these questions are always pop into our conversation. Both women’s husband would also agree to have a day off for some sourcing work, comparing quotation and also sourcing some materials for that ‘objective’.

Probably some people find it fun, and some find it enjoyable… but all these while I don’t quite like it. That’s why many of my friends find me really abnormal, cuz, that’s something in life that it’s hard to achieve now especially with the current inflation circumstances. Secondly, when comes to this such huge project in life, somehow, the other party that helps you to erect or demolish, they just count every single penny from you. Whether you like it or not, this is the fact of life.

Especially at the time you’re rushing them, they will give all sorts of excuses… I wonder to myself, how could some owner could have so many ‘objectives’ in life? I truly wonder, I find that truly amazing! Don’t you think so?

Many will curse like hell when come to an extend that every dollar and cents is flowing out from your pocket like pouring water. And yet, you don’t seem to see much of the thing from whatever you’d spent.

The worst… you will be under tremendous of stress that you can’t even sleep well, or eat well, or eat a lot till stomach bloated up. Well, for my case, I can’t even coop with this and whatever stress that I currently have at work. Can you imagine that stress till that you could get up at 3am and start wondering what in the world that I missed out for my project? Gee… that’s damn frustrating.

Sri Malaya Heritage Restaurant

** Sri Malaya has stopped operation **
2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 022a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 023a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 002a
Lately Penang has a lot of those cafés popping up in town, especially in UNESCO area. It gives many of us and even the tourist the choice of food and also a place for relaxing our mind.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 056a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 055a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 054a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 053a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 052a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 051a
I’ve found a few in Penang, though time is always a problem to compromise, despite heavy work load. But am proud to see more and more this energetic young people came out to invent into this. Sri Malaya is one of them, a few good friends joint venture into this café business and decorated the entire place beautiful and pleasant. In fact, many of the furniture down there are basically old furniture but with their dedicated mind and finger, they turn each of these furniture into what it is now.

I would have to give them a big applause for their creativity and dedication. How many of us will have the heart and mind to safe whatever it’s still usable. Anything that is barely usable couldn’t survive in many people’s life now. Perhaps the technology world has change the entire generation and making more of these nowadays.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 003a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 059a
Well, technology and generation gap aside… what attracts me down here is the air well, the air well is where the place attracts the natural light and the it’s cooling. Looking up, you could see those sophisticated chandelier dangling crystal lamp, according to Sam, one of the partner, those are old chandelier, they refurbished it all.

They turned the old building that along Rope Walk Road into this stunning beautiful place for us to dine, good food, good environment, and good music. And some good interior design magazines to read too. Nothing could you ask for more from Sri Malaya. Oh yes, not to forget is reasonable price too.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 023a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 026a
Every dishes name sound boring and normal to many of us, but till you have the first bite, honestly it gives us a surprise after that bite. For example, this Pineapple Fried Rice (RM12-00). What would you think of this Pineapple Fried Rice, well, many would think that is pretty normal and it’s uses pineapple cubes to fry it. But what surprises us was, they also added in some lychee fruit in it that makes the rice some lychee and pineapple fragrant too. Food presentation is also another factor that could make the entire dish delicious. I was the one that couldn’t resist to keep having a few spoon.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 032a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 029a
Whenever I see Aglio Olio (RM15-00), I just can’t stop myself from getting one. Well, this time it isn’t any surprise for not having one for myself. Perhaps, it looks bland to many people’s eyes. But the olive chunks that fried together that makes a difference on this plate.

2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 010a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 014a
Fish & Chip (RM19-00) is honestly very ordinary to many people, well, when this was ordered, I was asking myself, why Fish & Chips of all the dishes in the menu. I just couldn’t comprehend when he has made up this mind. But when it serves, I was like… ok, that isn’t a bad choice. It looks beautiful from the outlook, but what would it tastes like when you have the bite. Ta daa… the first bite was full of unexpected surprises, it was fresh and juicy.

2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 015a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 019a
Teriyaki Chicken Burger (RM15-00) was another item that I kept eyeing on it when I first read the menu. This is something that I never come across; it should be something unique to attract me for the bite. And true enough, it was absolutely delicious with the caramelized teriyaki sauce. Looking at the burger nicely sitting on the French fries, it was really a beautiful picture to snap on.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 042a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 039a
Chocolate Brownie (RM9-00), needless to mention at all, especially when I first looking at it, I could smell the strong chocolate when it served right to me. Looking at the melted chocolate dripping down from the top, I just can’t stop biting it. It’s definitely lovely to have one.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 072a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 071a
Avocado Smoothie (RM8-00) with a pinch of coffee that make this Avocado Smoothie a kick. This smoothie is the star for Sri Malaya Heritage Restaurant.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 075a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 076a
Mango Smoothie (RM8-00), uses fresh mango and the sweetness of the mango need not use any sugar syrup to add on for this glass of smoothie.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 047a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 049a
Iced Black Brew (RM7-00), uses the fresh illy coffee bean and brew. The coffee aroma just make you wide awake when they make this glass of coffee.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 033a
Black Brew (RM6-00), isn’t any bad choice if you op for a hot coffee for the day. Definitely would if you know it brews from illy coffee bean.

Currently Sri Malaya is having promotion, if you order their main, pasta or Little Malaya’s dishes, a free fruit juice is serve.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 014a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 021a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 006a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 007a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 003a 2010_08_07 Sir Malaya 004a
Choices are Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Watermelon & Carrot. Customer can also op for mixed fruit like mixed apple, carrot and orange as well.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 057a 2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 067a
Apart from what I have written above, Sri Malaya also caters private function in their restaurant. A spacious in their living hall upstairs and also very breezy even on a hot weather.

2010_07_31 Sri Malaya 068a
Sri Malaya also have the outdoor environment that is specially cater for smokers. Cooling and nice place to hang out.
