Opera

Have you ever have a gigantic salad bowl for a Mee Udang (Prawn Mee)?? Oh well, I have one tonight. And it was a pleasant dinner that hubby and I had; we both were extremely enjoying the environment and the surrounding atmosphere. Not to forget the service was absolutely satisfying!

Opera has opened for business for almost 3 years and it’s well known by the tourists but not the locals. It’s serving Oriental Food, but it’s more of Fusion food to me. It also awarded the Market Source Publishing Best Restaurant in Penang for Fusion Cuisine in year 2007.

This place has become happening since 6 to 7 years ago. Before that, it was a 2-way street where the shops are old and nobody wants to rent. Since government had closed down the road and revamped the stretch of shop houses, this place has become a new tourist spot.

Opposite this row of shop houses, you will have Garage where it has Slippery Sonority discotheque and Momo. This row of shop houses had turned out to be eatery shops too, some are now under renovation.

Anyway, I can’t recall where I read about Opera in Upper Penang Road and I told hubby let’s try out this place. Before we enter, we saw a couple of foreigners occupied the tables. Just like the person told us, this place is well known by the tourist but not the local. First we thought this is a western food restaurant, and we never expect it’s an oriental food.

Both of us were excited about this place, and honestly we scrutinized the menu that they handed to us.

The food that they offer is merely Fusion, for example for a Starter they have Mango Wanton, Pupadum Minty Dip.

They recommended the Oriental Spring Roll (RM16) for our Starter. The presentation was absolutely marvellous and beautiful. Hubby loves the spring roll, but I find it a bit oily. Taste wise, nothing to complain.

While we were waiting for our food, they are kind enough to tell us that upstairs is the washroom, and they also have things for sale too. Things like plates, cutleries, statues, etc.

As for the washroom, I was never expected it was actually upstairs of the restaurant and it’s nicely decorated too. Don’t believe me, check this out then.

When we came down, our drinks are being served. They recommended Coffee Tarik (RM10) if we would like to have a cup of coffee for the dinner. Well, hubby has op for it and he likes it very much. Though is local coffee, but it’s something different claimed from him.

As for our Main Entrée, hubby had Spicy Chicken with Cashew Nuts (RM24).

And I chose the Penang Best Prawn Mee aka Local Mee Udang (RM22).

I was stunned with the food was served and presented, especially for my Mee Udang basically is served in a gigantic bowl. 4 big prawns and 1 hard boiled egg, soup base is very much tomato taste.

And hubby is telling me that the portion that they served is huge. For a big eater like him, he really finds it big.

Total damage is RM83.60 for both of us. I know it’s kind of pricey, I think that’s the price that we gotta pay for the service and the environment.

New Lane Hawker's Food

I think many people know Penang is famous for its hawker’s delight and New Lane is the place where it gathers all the favourites. Most of the tourists or visitors will definitely drop by this place for a plate of CKT or CCF. In case, you wonder what is CKT and CCF? Well, that’s Char Koay Teow & Chee Cheong Fun.

Not sure do you realize that a bowl of...

Piggy’s Intestines Porridge costs RM5,

a plate of CKT is costs RM4

and a plate of CCF is costs RM2.

I live in Penang, and I hardly come to this place for food, unless we wanted to smack something light and simple before our dinner.

I am not surprised; these prices were not increase over night but along the years and days. And it has been increased for almost 100% since I came few years ago.

While am writing this post, am actually thinking should I promote this place?? Yes for the sake of Penang, no for the sake of our wallet, cuz it’s way too expensive.

Anyway, here’s what we have had the other weekends. Enjoy!

Home Cook Steam Chicken with Red Dates & Wolfberries

You know when comes to cook for 2 persons, you will tend to wonder how much food should I prepare and how many dishes should we have for 2 persons. If, we are cooking for a bunch of people like 4 to 6, that would be more easy to manage.

I know steaming food is always easy to cook, everything just steam steam and steam. No other ways of doing it, you don’t need to worry will it be tasted good or bad.

Let me share this with you today, Mom’s recipe – Steam Chicken with Red Dates and Wolfberries.

It’s simple and easy to make.

Ingredients
2 Chicken Legs + Thigh
1 Hand full red dates
2 Table spoons full of wolfberries
Few slices of Chinese Angelica Sinensis Root (Dong Quai)
Salt

a. Clean the chicken with salt first

b. And, chop it into pieces

c. Marinate with salt, more for taste

d. Wash the red dates with hot water

e. Wash the wolfberries with cold water

f. After marinate for about 30mins, place the pieces of chicken on the plate and put red dates and wolfberries on top of it

g. Put those Dong Quai in between the chicken

h. Steam for about 15 to 20minutes

Do you realize you do not need to add any oil on it once it’s done, cuz, while you steam the chicken oil will automatically flow out.

Another way of doing it, is to add 2 table spoons of Brandy or XO after steamed then served. That’s is also helping one to have a better blood circulation. Mostly confinement food will be like that.

Strada Restaurant & Patisserie

If you’re a CitiGold Member, you will get to enjoy a 50% discount for ordering Strada’s appetizer & their Rib Eye Steak. I didn’t know the promotion till we paid the bill.

Last night we were looking for food for dinner and I was totally out of mind what to have and hubby took a slow drive around town. When he drove pass Pulau Tikus, he saw Strada, then he asked what that is. I was like, ‘huh? What is what??’ Ended up, he has to drive pass to see what Strada is all about by turning back.

Strada is a new restaurant that serves various western food and dessert. This place was opened 4 months ago and it’s also Wi-Fi provided. The landmark of this place is directly opposite of Tan Mark Bookstore where the 7-Eleven and Penang Dental Surgery where about.

When we entered the place, I feel comfortable as its atmosphere is quiet and cozy. Especially the music that’s so soothing.

They have a corner where they placed all kinds of magazines while the guests are waiting for their food. All kinds of desserts are displayed in the displayed fridge for their customers to choose.

We took some time to decide what to order for our food in fact, however, the person in charge was kind enough to show us what they have. They have Set Dinner like any other restaurant which comprises of Appetizer, Soup of the Day or Salad, Main Entrée, Dessert and Coffee or Tea. Main Entrée offers chicken, fish and pasta if am not mistaken. On top of that, they also have Executive Dinner set which is slightly on the high price.

Hubby always goes for Set Dinner and he chose the Moroccan Grilled Lemon Chicken as his Main Entrée and Mushroom Soup instead of Salads.

It took about 20 minutes long to serve the appetizer which is Calamari served with tartar sauce. Diminutive in serving, but that’s what its called appetizer.

Came 2nd is the Mushroom Soup and a tiny little bread was served.

Then came the Main Entrée, the Moroccan Grilled Lemon Chicken. The meat was tender and it grilled to the perfect level. What come with the Main Entrée are mixed salad, baked tomato and a mashed potato.

After the Main Entrée was the Crème Caramel Dessert was being served and followed by a cup of coffee.

I didn’t have the set as it’s too filling for me, but I’ve Almond Crusted Sole Vill Fillet served with special yogurt béchamel instead. I didn’t quite like the fish, as it was fishy smell that I find it a bit difficult to eat. Not sure was it isn’t too fresh, but the person in charge did apologize for that.

Actually I wanted to find out from them are they part of the Strada Italian Cuisine that based in London or it’s merely taking the name only. Anyway, I’ll come back again for their dessert and its quietness. A nice place to get online instead of going to Starbucks or Coffee Bean, one good reason would be the quietness that I enjoyed very much.

Total damage is about RM67.10, I know we shouldn’t spend such money especially the market is extremely soft. However, if I don’t blog about, wonder what have I got to post then? [grin]

Sin Geylang Frog Porridge

When two persons have differences in terms of food hunting, who will normally give in? [grin] Well, for my case, hubby gave in to me cuz, my reason to him was I need to update my blog. With that, seriously he can’t argue much.

Not sure what happened to me today, I was just yearning for some frogs. Oh yes, before you could wonder and start to ask, no am not one of those which you’re thinking! [grin]

Probably I have been reading Heavenly Allie’s post on the frog porridge, thus I have the urge to try.

The last we went, they were not many dishes to offer, but this time, I was very happy to see they have a few ways of cooking the frogs, of course the usual one is spring onions and ginger and followed by kung poh which is dried chillies and dark soya sauce.

But this time, I see steam frogs with wolfberries, chilli padi and ginger, or with chicken essence, and even deep fried with belachan.

On top of that, they have other dishes like sweet and sour pork, roasted pork with dark soya sauce and other vegetables.

I was supposed to have a claypot of frog porridge, but with the food that we’ve ordered, I changed my mind instantly and have steam rice instead. Why? Reason is because the food that we’ve ordered was extremely drooling!!

Ok, let’s see what we have taken….

A steam frog with wolfberries, ginger and chilli padi.

A Yun Nan tofu, home made tofu and deep fried.

And, hubby’s favourite Roasted Pork Stir Fried with Dark Soya Sauce and Dry Chilli and Shallots.

Normally they will recommend one frog per person, a frog is costs about RM9, two is about RM17. Kung Po Frog is served in a claypot, and the porridge is the same too.

This place is emphasizes on 100% pure ingredients, and no MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) added.

Home Cook Claypot Chicken Rice

Times are bad, and news have been publishing about global financial turmoil, countries getting into recessions, etc.

Now that, technology sector in the States are falling apart and it’s affecting the companies in Malaysia, states like Penang and Kulim and Selangor. Many companies are curtailing their spendings, controlling budgets, planning year end holiday shut downs and so on.

What should we do to prevent ourselves into any difficulties when comes to such situation? Building our safety net by eating out less that would be one of the examples, scrap all the holiday plans, do less clothing shopping, etc.

With all the economy ‘bad news’ appearing everyday, I actually eat in for couple of weeks, and also took the opportunity to brush up my cooking skills.

Here I present my short cut way of cooking Claypot Chicken Rice. Since I don’t have claypot, thus am using a rice cooking pot. In fact, more easier and convenient.

Recipes below is for 3 persons –

a. 1.5 cup of rice, wash and add 2 table spoons of light soya sauce instead of salt

b. Marinate 3 debone chicken legs + thighs with 2 table spoons of light soya sauce, 1 table spoon of oyster sauce, 2 table spoons of dark soya sauce.

c. Marinate for 30 mins.

d. Cut Mandarin Sausages (Wax Sausages) into thin slices. Since I like this very much, I actually bought 2 pairs of these sausages and put all into the pot.

e. While marinating the chickens, wash those rice and with the mentioned measurement and start cooking.

f. About 3 minutes time, we’ll know there would be bubble bubbling in the rice cooker, which means it’s time to put those marinated chickens into the pot.

g. Then after about 3 to 4 minutes later, add on those sausages.

h. Once cooked, put about 3 to 5 table spoons of sesame oil and covered the pot for about 10 minutes. That will make anyone drool for it.

i. Once done, cut spring onions for garnishing.

Ta da … here’s my short cut ways of Claypot Chicken Rice!

The Seed Café, MidValley Mega Mall

After a heavy lunch at 7minutes to 4pm, the dinner took place at 9pm instead. And, wandering around in MidValley Mega Mall and do not know what to eat. 4 of us just wanted to have something light and simple. Ended up, we landed in The Seed Café at the ground floor.

The waitress there was attentive, and understands we were all came from out station and she was patiently recommending some of their signature dishes to us.

My sis didn’t have any main meal but got herself a plate of Screwpine Wings (Chicken Wings), which is an appertiser from the menu. She said, the plate of chicken wing is unique and delicious. The men will love it especially having it with a glass of beer and watching mid night footballs with their buddies.

My Brother-in-Law didn’t have anything heavy and ordered a Club Sandwich for himself.

I only have a Caesar Salad with Smoked Salmon & a Double Wild Mushroom Soup. Each of us have a few spoons full to try on the soup, it was unexpectedly delicious and fragrant.

Hubby got himself a Black Pepper Udon. Club Sandwiches or Caesar Salad will not stop his hunger, so it’s advisable to have a plate of carbohydrate meal. [LOL]

Apart from the meals, the waitress also recommended this drink to hubby, it’s a cucumber and peppermint, something cooling.

The dinner was satisfying and the service was excellent. Given a choice, I know I’ll come back again, but with so many eatery outlets in KL, I wonder when would be the next visit.

Total damage was RM115-50 inclusive of 15% taxes. It may be expensive to lots of people, but to me it’s worth the money with the excellent and attentive services that we have for the night, honestly, we appreciated that a lot.
