Yen Batu Kawan Seafood Restaurant

I guess I hadn’t visited this place for more than a decade. Over the years, it has transformed from a small hut into a proper concrete restaurant. It’s no longer just catering to tourists, but also to workers and visitors from the surrounding factories.

We went back this time because our relatives were visiting and requested a seafood dinner.

Lala with Thai Steam – Sour, sweet, and fragrant with garlic, coriander, and chili. Very appetizing.

Four Mixed Vegetables, famously known as “The 4 Heavenly Kings” (四大天王). This was probably the best dish of the night.

Oyster Omelette (蠔煎) – The kids’ favorite.

Belacan Fried Chicken – Considered one of the better dishes we had that evening.

Crabs – We ordered two different styles. I can’t quite recall the exact flavors, but judging from the photos, they looked like Black Pepper and Sweet & Sour.

Cantonese Steamed Garoupa – A classic and safe choice. Simple, but you can never go wrong with it.

Teo Chew Fried Mee – A comforting carbohydrate staple to complete the meal. Nicely stir-fried with decent wok hei, making it a satisfying dish to share.

Lastly, we also ordered Octopus.

If you ask me whether I would return… honestly, it’s not as good as I remember it to be. Maybe yes, maybe no.

I got to know this name 6 to 7 years ago, but never get a chance to visit. This name always appears in the receipts where I need to assist my superior to claim. After some time, you will just put it in your food hunting list, which you didn’t want to miss it.

On our recent trip to Singapore, I finally get to step foot into this place where I know 6 to 7 years ago. And it was just located opposite our hotel. After a long day meeting, and a quick check-in in the hotel… we were all get ready marching into to the mall for our dinner. Wondering what would be the food that will be filling up the 12 humongous stomachs or rather the gluttons.

What’s famous in Singapore is the gigantic mud crab, and many called that Sri Lankan Crabs, perhaps it is imported from there. The crab can grow as big as 28cm, the claw is as big as 15cm long, and the width can be wide as 8 to 10cm.  It’s a most famous seafood on any dining table, be it cooked it with chili, pepper or sweet and sour sauce.

Baby Squid was the appetizer. Though it looks pitiful, but, if it’s placed on the Lazy Susan and with 12 gluttons eyeing on it, how pitiful would that be? It will just go straight to the stomach.

Next is the gigantic Bamboo Clams. What we have seen in Penang is mostly small in sizes, but this is definitely the XL size that I ever seen so far. Though it’s simple to steam it with garlic and garnished with cilantro, but it honestly make the clam looks tempting to wallop and tasty too.

I supposed this is Fish Meat that deep fried with sesame seeds. But the info that I have gathered, they actually called this dish ‘You Tiao’ (油條).

Vegetables with Braised Mushrooms. Mushrooms though are huge, but it’s tender and juicy.

Braised Beancurd with Assorted Seafood, it looked nice to serve in a claypot.

Drunken Prawns. Didn’t get to take the picture of the pot of Drunken Prawns. But, you’re rest assured this is another dish that you didn’t want to miss it. The prawns were absolutely fresh and the soup is yummy. The soup is definitely cooked with alcohol, otherwise, how could you name this as Drunken Prawns, right?

Here comes the main character… the Sri Lankan Crab. And please bear in mind, it’s only 1 crab for the whole table, a 12 gluttons in a table! And this is definitely filled up the 12 gluttons’ stomach.

White Pepper Crab. Look at the claw, isn’t that big? It can be shared by both persons if you are not a big eater.

It was a sumptuous dinner and the companion was great... hope I can go back there again. :)

Hai Boey Seafood 海 尾海鲜

Happy New Year!!! Happy 2012!!
May 2012 brings us joy, health, peace…!!

Four adults and 2 heroes hopped into a 4x4, driving from North to South heading for seafood for dinner on a Boxing Day. The journey for KL folks is just merely a journey, but for us, we may think that it’s a bit too far. Nevertheless, great companion is something hard to find. It’s been awhile we did not meet up since 2009 Homedec in KL. And this gathering honestly, bring us back to the days that we had spent together.

Am not talking about anyone but my cousin brother. Many have said that, 2nd generation of cousins are normally not that close, but you would be surprised to know we are very close to each other. Sometimes you would just have to think through that it’s an honored to be cousins, relatives, friends, husband and wife and even parents and children.

My sister-in-law is a seafood lover, and my cousin brother doesn’t really fancy about cuisine, as long as someone look after his 2 heroes and he could have a peaceful meal, I guess anything for him would be fined. In fact, I’ve heard so much about Hai Boey Seafood, but never have a chance to visit. This is only my second visit. But hubby is like he knows what best down here.

Siong Ho Fish Head Noodle & Porridge @ Weld Quay

I have never attended any food review with the fellow bloggers from Penang before. April 18 was the first time that I’ve met some of the celebrity bloggers. And here comes the second one that initiated by Criz, and I finally meet Steven, Cokeworld Citizen, Buzzing Bee and Gourmet Garden.

It was an honor to receive the invitation from Criz, and invited me for a food review. I’ve never attended any food review with them before, all these while all the food reviews and blogger gatherings clash with either my family matter or health reason.

Criz also told me that there will be more review on the way too. In fact, such food review, you’re not only got to know the chef’s way of cooking, the operation in the kitchen and also some learning tips in photography with the follow bloggers. And the most common in all of us are… camera shooting here and there. Flash light here and there. It’s another way of enjoying the fun.

I was like any new comer that dare not move around, as I do not know what’s other surprises that will come around… so when the food was served, everyone was excited to take pictures, shooting here and there, where as, I was slow and taking time to shoot. But from all these incidents, you will tend to know which blogger has special request, special requirement, and some are laughing out loud that this fellow is fussy in taking pictures things like that. Bottom line, everyone is enjoying each other’s laughter and jokes.

Ingredients lining up nicely for us to take photo, Criz even line up those prawns nicely for us to shoot. Cokeworld Citizen took a crab on to the weighing scale for us to shoot on the crab.

The chef is posing his giant grouper fish head and showed us, all the camera flashes non-stop keep flashing on the chef as well as the fish head. That doesn’t sound like any celebrity, doesn’t it?

Ingredients for ordering down from deep fried fish meat, fresh fish meat, boar’s kidney, paddy frog, fish ball, meat ball, squid, prawns, bean curd skins, quail eggs and even crabs.

As for the noodles down from vermicelli, maggi noodle, thick vermicelli and they even cook seafood porridge or even meat porridge.

Ingredients for Tomyam soup which consists of mushrooms, tomatoes, not to forget the chili padi. And mint leafs for garnishing.

Criz also ordered the nutmeg drinks for us, apparently it’s their specialty.

Didn’t realize time passes so fast, 4 bowls of different type of noodle were served. Everyone of us were busy taking the best shot on these 4 bowls of noodles.

From the ordinary type of fish head noodle which is consists of deep fried fish meat and thick rice vermicelli, and followed by …

Fresh prawns with mushroom Tomyam Maggi noodle, garnished with mint leafs to make this perfect.

Another bowl is squid with maggi noodle (or we called it processed noodle).

The normal rice vermicelli (thinner type) is match with fresh prawns. Comparatively this is sweeter than squid.

After the 4 bowls of noodles, and here it comes the porridge which the chef had prepared for us.

First was served the fresh fish meat porridge.

Followed by the paddy frog porridge.

Fresh crab thick rice vermicelli (cho bee hoon) was another bowl for us to review, to taste. This is the thumbs up due to the soup base was absolutely sweet and tasty.

Fresh grouper fish head wheat vermicelli (mee suah) was what I thought the last bowl. Never knew and never expect there is another surprise coming up.

Here comes the surprise… the big pot of tomyam soup which consists of many other ingredients, ie. Squid, fresh fish meat, deep fried fish meat, fish balls, meat balls, minced meat, quail egg, mushrooms.

That ends the review for the night with lots of laughter, lots of camera flash lights, lots of jokes. Am sure there will be more reviews to come!
