Yeng Keng Café and Bar

2010_10_23 Yeng Keng 010a 2010_10_23 Yeng Keng 024a

Come to think of it, you ought to be more adventurous in your own life. If I don’t drove passed this area, perhaps I will never know there’s a boutique hotel down here and it’s solely own by Datuk Ong Gim Huat.

Visited this place once, but at that point in time, they don’t serve any meal, even for daily breakfast, it’s the hotel staff that went out and packed back for their guests. Perhaps this is one of the uniqueness of this hotel.

When we dropped by the second time, we noticed they have added the café service for their in-house guests as well as walk in guests too.

Can’t comment much on their food quality, but one thing for sure, they have plenty of room for improvement. Though we are not really a Hainan cuisine fan, but we do enjoy it once in awhile. For example the mushroom soup which I’d ordered. Light meal for the day, especially lunch, but it can never go wrong with a slice of garlic bread (RM6-00). In fact, that’s much fulfilling.

Hubby finds their coffee (RM5-00) was pretty smooth, and aromatic as well. Well, you will not doubt on Illy coffee, don’t you?? Especially freshly brew and the fragrant smell could make you feel like you’re in heaven.

Hainan Style Chicken Chop (RM15-00). Actually, I’ve been wondering… is there any difference compared to Western Style Chicken Chop?

2010_10_23 Yeng Keng 031a 2010_10_23 Yeng Keng 035a

Hainanese Mushroom Soup (RM10-00) is completely different from what we normally see in Western Café or Bistro. It has chicken meat, even chicken liver and glass noodle too, and of course with the spring onions that garnishing the soup. I wonder is this easy to make?

If you’re not really fussy about air-condioning place for a meal, this isn’t a bad place to recommend. In fact, in the evening, you could see many tourists walking along the street and enjoying every moment they could find in this heritage area.

32 Light Street Kopitiam

2010_05_03 32 Light Street 017a 2010_05_03 32 Light Street 019 Picture

A shop that is opened only for 2 months plus has full of delighted food for its customers, it’s also located at the strategic location in down town too.

Perhaps people that work around that area will have better opportunity to taste such good home cooked food. The shop opens from 8am to 6pm from Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 3pm on Saturday. Sunday is a rest day for them.

Breakfast is not only variety but also value for money. Butter toast is only RM1-30; where else many ‘kopitiam’ style of café is charging RM2-00. The café here is also Wi-Fi provided, isn’t that a good news to many people with laptop carrying along all the time? Even not the bulky laptop but a small device like Blackberry is also benefited from that service.

Since this is our 1st time, we have ordered their signature, Mutton Noodle (RM6-90) and Lam Mee (RM5-50). Both are tantalizing and tasty. Especially the mutton is absolutely tender and juicy. We believe it was cooked in a pressure cooker for a long hour, as such the soup is mouth watering and it’s delicious too.

As for the Lam Mee, is big in serving, and soup base is clear and delicious too. What I like the most is they added Chinese cilantro (parsley) to increase the fragrant of the noodle. That was a big thumb up for that bowl of Lam Mee.

Ice blended drinks is a norm for many café and bistro. That same for 32 Light Street, however, when you’re in doubt what to have to cure the thirst, they will recommend you some mix fruits ice blend drinks. For example hubby op for mango and peach fruit (RM4-80), it was slightly on the sour side, but it does refreshing especially on such hot weather.

Hainanese Delights懷鄉居

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 003a 2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 009a Hainanese Delight

If you’re looking back those fond memories that you used to have when you’re small, especially on those restaurants along Batu Feringghi beaches. This is the place where you could find back those memories.

Well, am referring to those Hainanese cooks that cook good spring rolls, curry kapitan, curry chicken, chicken pie and so on. I used to patron a restaurant named Hollywood when I was small, and they cooked good spring rolls and curry kapitan. Though Hollywood Restaurant still exists, but it has lost its shine since then, and now, I found this along Burmah Road. Yes, and this is operates by Hainanese cooks, managed by Hainanese too, they have many years of experience in cooking Hainanese food.

Hainanese Delight is the place that’s situated in the oldest hotel in Penang and is located along Burmah Road. It would not be difficult to spot on, Hotel 1926, a budget hotel along the road, a big signboard that shows Hainanese Delight, and that’s the one that caught many people attention.

You could find Hainanese Spring Roll down here, as well as Hainanese Mushroom Soup.

Isn’t that interest you? Well, it does for me. In fact, during one of the weekends, few of us meet up for lunch with our KL friends. And the food that we had was a lot to share, and it was absolutely delicious!

Down from noodles to any dishes that we had, am going to show you how tasteful it would be from these pictures. It not only brings back the fond memories that I have when I was small, but it also gives us the good taste bud in all of these too.

Chicken Pie (RM25), advisable to pre-order to avoid disappointment. It’s cover by puff pastry and lightly baked. I like the golden colour of the pastry, not to mention the meat and mushrooms. It’s absolutely a big thumb up for this.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 048a

Macaroni Pie (RM25). Macaroni, Cheese lightly baked with meringue or some put mashed potato.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 045a 2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 050a

Braised Lamb with Ladies Fingers (RM18). The lamb is braised till its tender and juicy, and the sauce is making one mouth watering. It isn’t that bad to serve with steam rice too.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 062a 2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 064a

Hainanese Spring Roll (RM6 per roll), my all time favourite. It rolled with crab meat, mushrooms, cabbage, and other ingredients.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 077a 2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 078a

Another signature which is famous from Hainanese, the Hainanese Chicken Rice (RM10), it’s a poach chicken with its liver and other intestines. Lightly added light soya sauce and best to have with the ginger chili sauce.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 060a 2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 057a

Inche Kabin aka Deep Fried Marinated Chicken (RM15) is a typical Peranakan dish, however, it’s also famous in Hainanese colonial. It’s always serves together with prawn crackers.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 066a

Chicken Curry Kapitan (RM12), it’s a dry version of chicken curry.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 044a

Hainanese Mushroom Soup (RM12), it’s an authentic Hainanese food. It’s not any other mushroom soup which we normally known off. However, this is something that comes with glass noodles, chicken cubes, mushrooms and other ingredients.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 081a

Fry Hor Fun, dry style. Which is absolutely fragrant, you can’t resist to have second serving.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 039a

Seafood Yellow Noodle, it’s good to have it with their home made sambal belachan.

2009_12_20 Hainanese Delights 040

Last… home made bun by BigBoysOven – Sunny & Sydney. It was a Sunday class conducted by them and it’s fresh and fragrant. How can we miss that right??

Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant 新琼安饭店

2009_11_07 SinAunKheng 013a

This place is definitely new to me, despite I heard so much about it.

It was a pleasant evening that hubby wanted to take his parent for a simple meal and also brought them here where they could find their fond memories.

This place has been operated for a long time, even many generations of customers have patronized them without fail.

2009_11_07 SinAunKheng 004a

Mr Ong is friendly and courtesy too… he was the one that recommended these dishes to us. He said for old folks, it’s not advisable to take Vegetable Soup which they have, but Sea Weed Soup with minced pork and fish ball would be the better choice.

2009_11_07 SinAunKheng 009a

Since hubby doesn’t take Pork Liver, he made this to Lean Pork Meat for us. This is Dark Soya Sauce with 5 Spices Powder Meat with Sour Pickles. I find it a bit sweet but it’s definitely delicious to have it with steam rice.

2009_11_07 SinAunKheng 002a

Curry Tumis Fish. I could see almost every table have this. I bet it’s one of the best. True enough, it is indeed.

2009_11_07 SinAunKheng 006a

Bean Curd with Leek is another signature dish that they have. Mr Ong recommended this as this is one of the easy food for old people.

Total bill plus drinks was only RM49.
