Jalan Raja
Uda in Butterworth honestly is a very long road at least to my standard or my
definition, it’s about 2.3km long. Despite
its colourful history of this place, I believe this road has many good food
that anyone of us could actually hunt for it.
Most famous
one is the Zi
Wei Steamboat, which is located at the end of the road and Ah Keat
Seafood Restaurant also another famous place for food, it’s also located at
the end of the road. Another famous food which you wouldn’t want to miss in
Jalan Raja Uda is their Yiu Char Kuih and Hua Chee.
Honestly you
can’t find this in Penang island, their crispiness of this kuih is really
making anyone fell in love with it, especially if you’re tasting it the first
time! You don’t have to crack your head
hard what to get for simple supper, in fact, a pair of Hua Chee or Yiu Char
Kuih is good enough to fill up your stomach.
The original
stall is located at the Apollo Market (where the residents named that), which
is at the mid point of this road, they also have branched out to both side of the
road, that is the beginning of the road and the end of the road. To make it
simple, 1st stall is located before the Shell Petrol Station. And
the last stall is located opposite the Zi Wei Steamboat Restaurant.
Few years
ago, each of this Yiu Char Kuih or even Hua Chee is only sell at RM0.70 each.
Beside from this 2 type of kuih, they also sell Ham Chim Peng. Their customers can patiently wait for their
orders eventhough you gotta wait for few minutes, so you can imagine how good is
this. I even heard many outstation folks also aware of this stall and drove all
the way here whenever they are back to home town or a visit to Penang.
You must be
wondering such food can only eat any time of the year but not during the 9th
Emperor weeks. Well, you would be surprised, in fact, they are even cater for
that too. So you don’t have to worry if you can’t taste it during the
vegetarian period.

Remark: My
apology of photos sharpness, it was taken by iPhone.
Good food is every where in town, you just need to have the patient and time to check it out.
Well, true enough my family had great time down there, yes down here in Fat Mum Seafood House (
When we were wondering what to have, she was telling us they have Sambal Petai Udang, and that got my mom’s attention, straight way Fat Mum said, let’s have a small plate to try out their way of cooking petai. It wasn’t that bad smell, and the prawns are fresh and springy.
Then mom wants something like Marmite Chicken, I believe they deep fried the marinated chicken and glazed with Marmite and Honey. It was crispy outside and juicy inside.
Next was the Asam Steamed Fish which Fat Mum insists we should try. True enough it was the best dish for the night. It wasn’t sour and it was just nice for everyone of us.
A plate of vegetable which no one would want to miss it. Kai Lan with other ingredients like carrots, mushrooms and meat.
When my brother wants a plate of Foo Yong Egg (Egg Omelet), Fat Mum didn’t want to take that order, she was saying why don’t we give a try on their Mongolia Tofu, if ever we don’t like that, that plate of dish will be on the house. Thank God, at least it satisfied my brother. [LOL]
Oh yes, Fat Mum also recommended their 3 in 1 to us. That honestly puzzled each of everyone of us, before we could answer her we didn’t want to have 3 in 1 coffee, she said that’s something that we should try. Again,… here’s a trademark, if it’s not nice, this glass of 3 in 1 will be on the house. 3 in 1 is actually Cucumber, Green Apple and Sour Plum (
And 2 bottles of Carlsberg for the men.

This is the statement that caught my attention when I first stepped into this shop. It’s easy to locate, it’s just next to
Here are the noodles that we had… Salted Fish fry Beehoon (

2nd noodle was Moonlight Flat Noodle (
Then we realize with the 2 plates of noodle may not be able to fill up the starving stomach that we have, thus, we have another plate of Hokkien Char.
Followed by the plate of Garlic & Chili Fry Clams was stunningly hot and spicy.
Steamed fish.
Ginger Chicken was absolutely nice to taste.
And last, a plate of green.
I won’t recommend this place if you’re really really looking for good food, however, if you’re ain’t any fussy person that requires good food for any meal; probably this is another place for you to consider. To certain extend, what to expect with 2 bottles of Carlsberg, and with so many dishes on the table to fill up the hungry stomach. Right?
