Chinese New Year Cookies: Green Pea Cookies

2011_01_20 Green Pea Cookies 026a
When comes to this season, everyone is busy baking, buying and decorating. Baking as in baking cookies, buying as in buying food for reunion dinner, and buying new clothes for the new year, decorating is to decorate your house as bright as beautiful as possible and hoping that will bring the luck and prosperous to the family.

This would be my 1st time after 8 years of not making any… wonder how would it taste like… and seriously, the excitement for making this for the family is still the same.

Making this for my younger sister… this is her all time favourite. I wonder will she like this version which added sesame oil in the dough.

Anyway, … when I bake this, the whole house is full of sesame aroma.

I adapted Lingze’s recipe on this and that could make about 100 over cookies.

2011_01_20 Green Pea Cookies 006a
Ingredients300g ground green pea
175g icing sugar
300g all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
200g corn oil
20g sesame oil
1 small egg (for egg wash)

Method

2011_01_20 Green Pea Cookies 010a

  1. Weigh all dry ingredients per what stated in the recipes, and mixed them all in a large bowl.
  2. Mixed the dried ingredients by using whisk that will mix the dried ingredients well.
  3. Add oil gradually to form dough.
  4. If the dough is too crumby, add more oil, but for this case, I added the sesame oil.
  5. 2011_01_20 Green Pea Cookies 029a 2011_01_20 Green Pea Cookies 031a
  6. Once done, roll a small tiny dough and put it on the baking tray.
  7. Use round tip to form a tiny hole.
  8. Brush with lightly beaten egg wash before baking.
  9. 2011_01_20 Green Pea Cookies 016a
  10. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes at 170 degree Celsius.

From a coffee lover to now an entrepreneur, that owns Coffee Lane. Coffee Lane is a place where you can have coffee that is freshly ground, freshly brew, and freshly serve with Mr Terry Beh’s passionate heart.

This is the place where you can enjoy the most expensive coffee in the world, and yes, that’s right, that’s Luwak Coffee. When we were expecting a cup of such nicely brew Luwak Coffee, unfortunately they were running out of stock for the day, and it takes a month to deliver it. Looks like we would have to come back for this coffee.

Mr Beh will normally asks his customers what type of coffee do they prefer, some coffee has the fruity taste and some are basically very bitter, thus, he will recommend per the customers’ preference. If this is your 1st visit, he will normally introduce Mandheling Coffee which is from Sumatra.

If you’re truly a coffee lover, you will tend to have bitter coffee, a coffee without sugar to taste is originality. I don’t deny the fact that I do love coffee, as such I chose Java Arabica coffee for the day and hubby have Aceh Gayo Coffee.

These coffee are freshly ground and brew in vacuum coffee maker, in short they call this syphon coffee maker, and it was invented by Loeff of Berlin in the 1830s, reference made from Wikipedia. Such coffee is not thick in looking but the taste is definitely have its kick.

Coffee Lane also have simple food like Nasi Lemak, Triple Decker Sandwiches, Tom Yam and so on. Since we were there during lunch we both have something simple and light to fill up the stomach.

Tom Yam Bee Hoon Soup was my order, and the soup base is basically has its fragrant aroma. Can you believe it, I basically wallop the entire bowl of soup. The prawns are absolutely fresh and they also peeled off the shell for their customers. Isn’t that courtesy?

Nasi Lemak is basically an item for many bistro, café, eatery outlet. How could Malaysian miss this, hubby have a plate of this and found that the coconut rice is definitely given a big thumb up. It was absolutely fragrant and the curry that comes with it, it makes this Nasi Lemak a complete set.

Him Heang 馨香餅家

What causes heavy traffic in Burmah Road??

Nope, it’s not the schools that along the road… not even road side stalls’ customer that causes that too!!

The actual fact….. is this…. Him Heang!!

Him Heang is a place where many tourists will swing by no matter how busy their schedules are. What are famous down here are their Tau Sah Peah (豆沙餅), Beh Teh Saw (馬蹄酥) & Phong Peah.

They used to use lard as one of the ingredients, perhaps nowadays people are more health conscious and they are now using vegetable oil instead. I was told Him Heang was established in 1948, can you imagine it has been here for 61 years already.

When I first bought the Tau Sah Peah, was only selling at RM5, then increased to RM6-50 and RM8-50.

Guess how much per box are they selling now??? It’s RM9-50 per box, and yet, you could still see the stream of customers flowing into the shop.

Happened that this is the box that I bought, there’s a defective one…. See!!

CNY Cookies: Green Pea Nuts Cookies

My sister has been wanting to make Green Peanut cookies by herself, she likes this cookies so much so that she can wacked everything on her own.

With her anticipation of making this, I direct Lilian’s recipe to her.

The entire work was started from 4pm and ended at 9pm plus. The most tedious part or rather difficult part is the removing the nut’s skin. Like what Lilian said, mostly colouring are on the skin itself. And my sis really follows what Lilian did, she bought those kacang putih instead of pre-make ingredients.

Anyway, once the skins are removed, we grinded it as fine as possible.

Start weighing all the ingredients and lump everything into the mixing bowl. Once blend well, we added the measured corn oil into the dry ingredients.

Then mix again. Lilian also said in her blog that it has to be knead well, if it gets crumble easily, add some more oil.

Then after, we roll the dough into tiny balls. The sizes of the balls are difference from one after another, well, after all it’s a non-sale items, isn’t it?

Oh ya, remember to preheat the oven at 170°C for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then bake those tiny balls for that temperature and bake for that duration.

And ta-da… here’s the finished products!!! Drool??
