Hot Bowl Nyonya Delights

2011_07_02 Hot Bowl 001a 2011_07_02 Hot Bowl 005a
I’ve heard so much about this place and this is my first time here. This is like my previous experience in Sushi Kappo Miyasaka, where I could miss and kept thinking how good is their curry mee.

Recently I brought my sister and my brother-in-law for breakfast… and it took for about 20 to 30 minutes for them to serve us the bowl of noodles. Apart from that, you gotta be early to grab a seat too, otherwise, just like us the 1st attempt we came and leave without second thought as there were a few of their customers were standing and waiting for a seat.

So, you can imagine how delicious, spiciness, tasty, mouth watering, droolicious about this bowl of Curry Mee!

Of course apart from Yellow Noodle and Vermicelli and the cockles … you have other side dishes like porch chicken, ordinary koay teow soup, chicken rice and other condiments.

What’s good about this curry mee is their home made chili paste. It’s something that you shouldn’t miss it! It’s hot and it’s like numb your tongue without realizing it. So, you can imagine how spicy it is…

Nam Heong Restaurant 南香茶餐室

Since our loved one has left us, we hardly go back to this place… the place that earned its fortune in tin trade. But we do drop by if we are on the way to the city – KL. No doubt Ipoh food is always nice, and hearty, at least it does to me, especially their bean sprout chicken, Foh San Dim Sum, etc.

I always wanted to take my favourite Kong Heng Popiah and many times I will either lost my way or turn to the wrong junction. Then ended up I gave up for another food. Of course, Nam Heong of Jalan Bandar Timah isn’t that bad choice if you are looking for Ipoh White Coffee.

Let me make the comparison between Ipoh and Penang food … here goes….

2011_03_06 Nam Heong 004a

Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun is different from Penang’s type. Penang will add shrimp paste and other sauces, but Ipoh will add green chilies and some curry sauces, that’s make it so unique that you wouldn’t decline to have one.

2011_03_06 Nam Heong 001a

Ipoh Char Koay Teow will have to give way to Penang’s one. Cuz, it will never have the Penang’s aroma, even though they fried like Penang’s way. Some how, something is missing some where. Can you spot anything missing?

2011_03_06 Nam Heong 008a

Ipoh Curry Mee is also another noodle that is different from Penang too. Penang will add long beans, tau kua and Cantonese called it Tau Foo Pok, and soup base has strong coconut milk. Where as Ipoh Curry Mee has more spices and stronger aroma too. Another tip that will tell you that this doesn’t belong to Penang Curry Mee, that’s the lime that squeeze in the soup.

2011_03_06 Nam Heong 010a

Ipoh Hor Fun (Flat Noodle 怡保雞絲河粉) is Ipoh’s signature. Penang Koay Teow Th’ng could never beat them. I wonder why? Perhaps Ipoh Hor Fun added some shrimps into their stock that makes the soup base fragrant and tasty. Even so, their flat noodle is smooth and nice. One could think of the water that they use to make noodle. Many were speculating they were using mountain water for making it, but, how true would that again? Right?

Hun Sai Fish Head Bee Hoon

2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 001a

Have you experience sitting in front of the grave yard and having your bowl of soupy hot fish head bee hoon (rice vermicelli)??

Well, I’ve just experienced it not long ago… seeing row by row of tombs, and greeneries of grasses that lining these tombs, is an unique scenery. If it’s not because of the recent disciplines, guess I would not discover this place. I was told the early start, it was only tricycle running the business, but now it has been growing with a small pick up van with a few helpers.

2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 005a 2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 004a

I supposed this is family running business, and it was started it small and now it’s growing to such situation, and it has also gained a certain percent of customer base for this. Even tables and chairs are unique…

The ingredients that preparing for the bowl of bee hoon is absolutely fresh! Though I didn’t order a bowl of prawn bee hoon, but I could see the prawns has its freshness and the meat is rather firm.

2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 012a 2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 014a

Both fish meat bee hoon costs RM4-50 per bowl, regardless deep fried fish or fresh one.

As for prawns is about RM8 per bowl. In fact, I am thinking I should go back again for the prawns. It was absolutely tempting!

2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 006a 2011_06_05 Paya Terubong Fish Head Bee Hoon 008a

Another type would be the assorted ingredients, eg. meat, meat ball, intestines, etc.

We have two different opinion on this, hubby finds it just nice, where as I find it too blend. But, talking about freshness of the ingredients, I do not have doubt about it. I guess I’ll leave it to the individual to judge then.

Bora-Bora Restaurant 卜拉茶餐室

~ The stall has terminated their  business ~

Chee Cheong Fun (Rice Noodle Roll 豬腸粉) is a type of noodle that many people knows, especially in different states, it prepares differently. A very good example, Penang style of Chee Cheong Fun is come with 2 types of sauces where it has the shrimp paste and black sweet sauce (甜酱, timzheong, it is likely a variation of hoisin sauce. Source from Wikipedia), and also sprinkle of sesame, peanut and fried shallots. In Ipoh, way of preparing Chee Cheong Fun is also different from Penang too. What Ipoh has is come with curry sauce, or even sweet sauce, green chilies, chili sauce, sesame, etc.

Some stalls are creative will have Chee Cheong Fun in Curry Soup. I bet many have tried this version before. But have you ever try it on Hokkien Mee Soup then?

Soup base is home made, and it’s the authentic way of preparing it, example, peel off the prawns shell and blend with chili and fry it, most important is without MSG.

It isn’t difficult to find this special Chee Cheong Fun in fact, it’s around in town. And it’s located in Bora Bora too…

2010_07_24 Bora Bora Hokkien Mee 021a 2010_07_24 Bora Bora Hokkien Mee 022a 2010_07_24 Bora Bora Hokkien Mee 007a
Hahaha… let’s not fool anyone… but the fact is this Bora Bora Coffee Shop that located behind Eastin Hotel has this special Hokkien Mee, it’s Chee Cheong Fun in Hokkien Mee Soup.

What it has in the bowl is shrimp, eggs, char siew, fried shallots, beans sprout and so on. If you want additional egg that would be RM0-60, char siew is RM1-00. This special bowl of Hokkien Mee will only available for this month only, as the Tau Keh Soh will be returning back to school and giving her dedicated care to the kindy, which requested by many parents.

This special bowl of Chee Cheong Fun is only costs RM3-00. So, grab it fast before it’s too late.

Hot Wok

** HOT WOK has been closed down **

2010_06_07 Hot Wok Hokkien Mee 007a
Whenever we drove pass Burmah Road, you will tend to look at both side of the shop houses, especially your car stop at the traffic light in front of Penang Plaza. You will tend to look on the left which is the luxury car – BMW show room, or Penang Plaza. Further up would be the shop houses like Hot Wok is there, BBQ Ribs used to be there, but now closed already.

2010_06_07 Hot Wok Hokkien Mee 002a
Whenever I drove pass, I will tend to wonder Hot Wok’s Hokkien Mee, is it delicious in tasting. Of course, is always wondering but ever have a chance to visit till recently we both really running out of idea what to have.

That day we just parked our car in Penang Plaza, and walked in to Hot Wok, can’t remember where we heard it from, a bowl of Hokkien Mee in Hot Wok costs RM7-00 and it’s one of the expensive Hokkien Mee in town. Actually I was a bit skeptical to step in, but hubby as usual has the adventurous spirit to try on. What can I say more, right??

2010_06_07 Hot Wok Hokkien Mee 008a 2010_06_07 Hot Wok Hokkien Mee 009a
Honestly, that bowl of Hokkien Mee is pretty good, is delicious as the one we tried in One Corner Café in Bawasah Road. Soup base is full of prawn aroma, with added fried shallots sprinkle on top of the bowl of noodles, and when you bite on it, you can hear the crunchy sound on those fried shallots.

Well, doesn’t that sound like heaven to you? Well, it does to hubby and me.

Not to forget with a plate of Roasted Pork, you can either op to have the roasted pork in the bowl or separately serve.

And guess what? That bowl of fragrant, tantalizing, delicious and mouth watering prawn noodles do make up our day, and it’s only costs RM4-00.

Kheng Pin Café 群賓茶餐室

This coffee shop is full of people and the flow of people streaming in is basically non-stop. It’s like any other tourist spot in Penang that is a must visit place. And many people that came into this shop must order the 3 items that is famous for this café.

Well, what is that then?? Hainan Chicken Rice 海南雞飯, LoBak 卤肉 and Wantan Mee 雲吞麵.

2010_05_15 Hawker Delight 010a 2010_05_15 Hawker Delight 009a

As far as we know, the chicken rice stall has been operating since the eighties by an old couple whom assisted by their daughter then. As time goes by, the old couple passed the stall to their daughter, and since then the stall is getting renown from its smooth skin chicken, fresh tender juicy meat. Because of the old couple retirement, the daughter has to call back her husband whom is a shoe maker for a renown brands in Kuala Lumpur to come back to help out the business until today. One can recognized that they too are getting old, despite the brisk business; they still continue to provide the best to their customers.

2010_05_15 Hawker Delight 005a 2010_05_15 Hawker Delight 007a

LoBak stall history… a humble and friendly old man that owns the stall. I was told the stall only operate 9 months in a year, and another 3 months will be representing Penang for a Penang Food Promotion that was held in Singapore every year. So, I guess one could imagine how good is this LoBak! Especially their special made chili sauce, 1 small bowl is definitely not enough for anyone of us.

2010_05_15 Hawker Delight 002a

Here comes Wantan Mee. Many claimed that this is one of the best. Well, probably I’d tried other stalls, but there’s nothing to complain about it. The noodle texture is crunchy per say and the sauce for the whole plate is definitely tantalizing. Reason is, it makes people feels the ‘kocha’ feel because they use lard oil for the sauce, and the noodle was told is home made too.

With so many good foods down here, how could one resists not to visit, right??

文昌海南雞飯 Wen Chang Hainan Chicken Rice

2010_04_30 Wen Chang Chicken Rice 005a

Hubby told me he heard from friends that this is one of the best Hainan Chicken Rice in town, and many people have to line up for order. Well known of the tender juicy meat and soft bones, as well as the Five Spices Meat (Loh Bak 卤肉).

2010_04_30 Wen Chang Chicken Rice 004a 2010_04_30 Wen Chang Chicken Rice 002a

That’s make me have the temptation to try it out personally. Thus, one of the Saturday, we drove all the way from mainland to try this out. In fact, was more of convenient sake, we have to have our lunch down town before we could run our errands.

2010_04_30 Wen Chang Chicken Rice 006a

We were there pretty early, and the stall was ready for business. I could smell the rice which was cooked with pine leaf (Pandan Leaf), and garlic. And also see many chickens regardless boiled or roasted hung up nicely on the stall. How could that stop people coming to eat here, right?

Thus, we have the normal order, chicken and loh bak for lunch. Simple, yet delicious, how could anyone resist that, right?

CY Choy Road Hokkien Mee 橋頭正宗福建麵

2010_02_27 橋頭正宗福建麵 003a 2010_02_27 橋頭正宗福建麵 002a

Apparently this is one of the authentic Hokkien Mee in Penang and it’s located at the end of CY Choy Road. Before it moved to the shop lot, it was basically underneath a tree, where the traffic light is located.

And because of everyone knows this stall by that area, the owner didn’t want to move to any place but stay put there.

It was a coincident morning that we both thought of having a bowl of Koay Teow Th’ng for breakfast, but ended up; we both were landed in this place for breakfast.

The stall is open from 7am till 5pm, and it’s off every Monday if I remember correctly. It’s operated by a specky uncle whom stand at his stall and ready to take order from his customers.

2010_02_27 橋頭正宗福建麵 006a 2010_02_27 橋頭正宗福建麵 004a

Per bowl is charging RM2-50 for a small bowl, about RM3-50 for a big bowl of Hokkien Mee. Apart from Hokkien Mee, they are selling Loh Mee as well. Well, basically Hokkien Mee & Loh Mee are something has to come together… you just can’t separate them apart.

Soup base was slightly clear to me compared to the other Hokkien Mee that I’d tried. It doesn’t have that spiciness in the soup, but in fact, it’s tasty. And it didn’t give you the thirsty throat if you wallop the entire bowl of soup.

Overall, this is a stall should pay a visit if you’re around the town. Parking space is not an issue of course, you gotta be really fast to turn into right after the traffic light.

Restaurant Pau Kee 保記沙河粉茶餐廳

2009_12_26 Pou Kee 014a 2009_12_26 Pou Kee 011a 2009_12_26 Pou Kee 012a

Know what… I actually planned to look for this shop when I got to know from WMW’s post. I was searching here and there and couldn’t find it, ended up; I landed in Wing Heng Seng Coffee Shop. While we were about to get up and leave the place, I accidentally saw the shop and upset that we just had a heavy breakfast. But hubby was grumbling to me that that he didn’t have enough but hope to get some snack.

Well, being a blogger you will persuade your other half to try out and take the opportunity to take photo, right? I was having that thought and hubby could really know me well, he was very spontaneous and brings me there for another round of breakfast.

2009_12_26 Pou Kee 001a 2009_12_26 Pou Kee 002a

When we enter the shop, I could see WMW’s post every where… if am not mistaken it was on StarOnline as well.

2009_12_26 Pou Kee 009a

Now, here’s the bowl of Ipoh Sar Hor Fun with Prawn Sui Kow.

Soup base is fragrant, I supposed they have boiled it for long hours, the flat noodles is soft and smooth.

With the prawns, chicken slice and some chives on top of the noodle that makes the bowl of hor fun lovely and tempting.

Prawn Sui Kow was fresh and the meat was tender, I could feel the springy of the prawns. So, how could it be wrong that the prawns are not fresh then, right??

2009_12_26 Pou Kee 004a 2009_12_26 Pou Kee 005a

The bowl of hor fun could be accompanied by 2 types of chilies, either chili paste or chopped chili.
Now looking at these pictures, remind me of the bowl of hor fun at this time of hour. :)
Gee, I just miss that…
