Quay Café

2012_04_21 Quay Cafe 024a 2012_04_21 Quay Cafe 002a
Every 1st and 15th of the Lunar calendar, many Buddhist will go for vegetarian food. Some will go for a full day practice some will go for half day. With this new place that CK Lam that has written, it definitely gives many of vegetarian folks an additional choice of venue.

This place is definitely not the usual vegetarian stall that normally has in Penang. It’s like a café kind of concept, though self service in terms of collect your own cutleries, and place it back at the designated place after finishing. The whole environment is cozy, pleasant and it’s also airy.

What I like most is you have to line up for order and also make payment before the food is served. Choose your seat, be it is high chair and table or the normal height. Table size is big and spacious for 6 to 8 people. Food choice though limited, but, it’s all quality food. Well, at least I believe in that… limited choice produce quality products.

Home Made Noodle with Mushroom (RM6), a special home made sauce, that is come with braised bean curd, vegetables and mushrooms.

Chicken Rice Set (RM7), I supposed this is what they called it The Quay Set which is only available on every 1st and 15th day of each Lunar month. The set come with 2 choices of vegetables, 1 is what we normally called it Kiam Chai Th’ng and the other is Chap Chai.

Snacks that is many Penangites favourites are Popiah which is RM2 per roll.

And Rojak (RM5). That’s definitely a kick if you happen to bite on a sourish unripe mango.

There are many people going for vegetarian food nowadays, well, it’s not because of religious, but mostly are encourage due to the current environmental threat. In fact, it’s good to have this momentum going, so that more and more people will be seriously in taking care of our earth. Taking care of our earth is not only you and my responsibility, but it’s all of our responsibilities. Don’t you agree?

Hua Yuan Restaurant

~ No Longer in Operation ~

Having a vegetarian restaurant that opens till 9pm is hard to find, but one opens up to 10.30pm, honestly this is a good news to many vegetarians. Some more, all dishes are made to order, and it’s not like any other just like economy rice style where you get a plate and dish out the food that you want. It’s just like any other ordinary restaurant, but this is vegetarian that’s all.

Discovered this restaurant not long ago, and honestly the food is absolutely delicious and the price is reasonable. Though compared to ordinary restaurant, vegetarian restaurant do not have much choices, or variety, but with the current situation where many folks out there are shouting for saving the earth and all that… this is not a bad place to consider.

What makes us falling in love to this place is this special dish, its normal and nothing special, but what attracts my attention is they remove the head and the tail of a bean sprout. Thus, I concluded that the owner is definitely taking hygiene into factor. This was our very first dish recommended by the owner and the owner’s wife too. Especially the tau-keh-soh, she will recommend add some chili padi to this. And am talking so much, so what dish is this then? Well, that’s Bean Sprout with Salted Fish

How would be a Pai Kut Ong (排骨王) taste like for a vegetarian dish? Then let me tell you, it makes no different at all. It tastes exactly like a Pai-Kut Ong. Seriously, how could you not impress, right? A small dish like this is only RM8-00, it’s definitely reasonable for 2 to 3 persons.

Marmite Honey Hericium (Marmite 猴頭菇, hóutóugū, RM8-00) is their signature dish. Marmite is something that you either hate it or love it. However the way the make this is definitely no regrets.

Another signature dish, which you shouldn’t miss is Huizhou Preserved Vegetable & Pork Preserved vegetables is either too salty in other places or too blend, but for this, it has its combination of the vegetarian meat. In fact good to eat with their special made Sambal Chili.

Not to forget their Sambal Chili also the best! You shouldn’t miss it as well. I’ve tried many places, their Sambal Chili is something that you wouldn’t want to miss, though it doesn’t has the sambal belachan taste, but, it’s blended with ginger and chilies that make the chilies so awesome!

Apart from the dishes that mentioned above, they also have fried noodles like Hokkien Char, and Fried Rice. My personal favourite is their Hokkien Char.

Yong Chow Fried Rice is also nice to have. Normally fried rice is oily, but bet you, you can have this place of fried rice not to have extra oil on your plate.

If you find Hokkien Char and Yong Chow Fried Rice is not enough for you. What we did was, we added Deep Fried Kangkung aka Water Spinach It’s crispy and mostly children will love it.

The restaurant is located at the new 3 storey shop houses that are opposite the Chinese Cemetery. And Hua Yuan Restaurant is situated the shops behind, car park lot is not an issue, it has plenty of spaces for parking too.

For You Yen Vegetarian Centre

2011_04_23 For You Yen Vegetarian Restaurant 002a

I’ve been silent for the entire month, and this silent April had many things happened, that inclusive of a new born baby, a mother demised, and a Royal Wedding been held. Of course, I would have nothing to do with the Royal Wedding, however, it’s something that many that had watched his mother’s wedding in 30 years ago, would love to watch his wedding.

But am ain’t going to blog anything about the Royal Wedding Banquet. But a vegetarian restaurant that I recently discovered.

Many Buddhis

t believes after a person demised, if you’re on veg for 49 days that would help the demised leave with good and bright path. Whether to believe or not, bottom line the left behind are doing this out of respect.

Due to recent mourning discipline, we have discovered a few good vegetarian restaurants in the island, to our surprise, they are pretty good in fact. One of them is For You Yen Vegetarian Centre that located along Dato Kramat Road, few steps away from the former Federal Theater, or Ah Long CKT.

They have a few sets where cater for 2 to 3 persons, or 3 to 4 persons. To our surprise, they even have vegetarian steam boat as well. Apart from all these varieties offers, they also cater for Ching Beng, and funeral food as well.

Each of these sets, have special name to it, what we have was Double Wisdom, that is cater for 2 to 3 persons and costs about RM23.

Double Wisdom consists of 3 dishes and 1 soup.

Vegetarian Week
