Ang Hoay Loh 紅火爐

Ang Hoay Loh (紅火爐) is not a strange place for many Penangites. Even those had worked in Penang or studied in Penang before will some how re-visit this place again. Well, why then?? Simple, reason is because of the acquire taste of the food served and it’s Hokkien Cuisine. Bear in mind, Penang is an island with almost 70% Hokkiens. Right?

I brought my parents to this place few weeks ago, which my dad brought us to Ang Hoay Loh when it was in Brick Klin Road (Jalan Gurdwara) some donkey years ago. It’s a place reminds them for taking us there for dinner and lunch, and also the special taste that they like.

Since it’s only 4 of us, we didn’t get to order a lot of food. Most important, what mom loves most is their Bak Ki. I supposed this is a Lean Pork & Prawns Soup.

And not to miss their famous Fried Glass Noodles. It was full of prawns and oysters. And this is something that I’ve not eaten for a long long time. Just loving this.

Pan Fried Oysters Egg (蠔煎). Though this cannot compare to other famous stall, but seriously, it’s good too.

And some greens, Stir Fry Hong Kong Kai Lan with Garlics. (芥蘭清炒)

The food was nothing to complain about, the only thing is the waiting time. Almost 30 to 40 minutes waiting time. Well, what to do,… my old folks like this place.

The Apartment Cafe & Restaurant

I know I’ve been talking about my recently KL trip and have not been posting anything from Penang, and I promise this is the last post of that trip, the indulgence trip or exclusive trip that I recently had….

Anyway, this is worse lunch that we both have ever had for our stay in KL.
Hubby said he’s not going there anymore again!!

Both of us thought of dropping by The Curve before we left for home, so, I told hubby let’s try out The Apartment, as I’ve seen many KL Bloggers blogging about it, and am sure must be a good one or a recommended one.

Probably I have too much of expectation, it turns out to be my biggest disappointment for this trip.

The biggest disappointment is the coffee which was served. Look at it, it’s a cup without a tea spoon, and saucer, especially for an outlet like that in The Curve.

Disappointment 2, serving time took us for nearly 45 minutes to serve, and further more, not many tables were in the outlet. And mind you, the 45 minutes was only served us the coffee without our lunch!

Disappointment 3, the food that they served was a mistake.

We didn’t know especially we’re from another state, thus, was hoping this the lunch that we ordered. When they served, we were like looking at each other, is this our lunch, and what described in the menu is exactly the same as what were served, minus off the potato chips. Though we should check it out ourselves, but then with that moment, we do not have the confident in them anymore.

We just ate whatever was served whether it’s right or wrong.

The entire trip was so exclusive and indulgence and it was spoilt by this lunch that we had, say no more for this!!!

Imbi Palace Restaurant

Sometimes I just wonder does Penang has good egg tart like KL does?? Seriously I don’t know and have not really hunt into that yet. But am always lucky to have my best buddy to take me to try KL good food.

Why would I say that, simple… that last day of breakfast in this Mama Mia fever period, Eve and family brought hubby and I to this Imbi Palace for breakfast. A place only opens at 10am on weekend and 11.30am on weekdays.

They are serving typical & authentic Hong Kong Dim Sum per Eve’s comment, as well as Cantonese food during lunch and dinner time.

What’s famous down here is their roast pork belly what Cantonese called it Siu Yok (燒肉).

Hubby has been into reviewing good roast pork kind of field lately, whenever he sees that, he’ll order a plate and try. With this, he gave 2 thumbs up. It’s like now you see it now you don’t kind of thing. It could just melt it in your mouth, and the skin is extremely crispy.

Other ordinary dim sum that we have for that morning was Siu Mai (燒賣).

Har Gau (蝦餃). And many other more like …

Pan Fry Rice Noodle (腸粉)

Zhaliang (炸兩)

馬來糕

Spring Roll (春卷)

Pan Fry Turnip Cake (煎蘿蔔糕)

奶黃包/奶油包

Egg Tart

鹹菜豬肚湯

生魚粥

Seriously, this is nothing compared to Penang Dim Sum… if you notice, I hardly blog about Penang Dim Sum. Say that am bias, but what I have down here compared to Penang, this is the best.

The Living Room Tea Break

Know what… Before I prepared for the Christmas Eve dinner, hubby and I were searching for a place for a Wi-Fi service. And guess what, we found The Living Room in Westin KL.
I’d just loved this place… so convenient, so good, so nice… unfortunately, not many have the customer courtesy like Mandarin Oriental.
Anyway, just a short sharing on a tea break that we had down here.
Hub have chrysanthemum tea for himself.
Where I have a cup of brew coffee, well, nothing to shout about, and normally I do need some caffeine to boost up my mind.
Hubby ordered something extra, spring roll. I’ll not encourage anyone to try this cuz, it was extremely oily. Perhaps they were rushing of time as they were all busy decorating the place for Christmas Eve Buffet Dinner.

The C Club

I have never try foie gras (鵝肝) (Pronounce it: fwah-grah) in my life, and as far as I know it’s an expensive dish. And it is also one of the world luxury’s food, apart from Caviar (魚子醬) & Truffle (松露).

But, that night on Dec 24, Christmas Eve, hubby and I have the opportunity to taste it and we both fell in love immediately with it. It was so soft, it’s like a butter melting in your mouth. One word to describe it – Gorgeous!

The day was started this way…

I have not heard about this, neither do I have dine in here before. In fact, discover this place on my last food hunt trip in Oct. I know I know, I have yet to post anything thus far, but am more excited about this trip instead. Well, just one reason, and the reason is simple, cuz, I was moved by Mama Mia. [grin]

Anyway, on the eve itself, hubby and I were wandering in the mall and we both wanted to have some quality time to spend on these 3 days 2 nights stay.

We walked around to see what to have for our dinner tonight… and knowing KL’s life style is better to make a reservation soon, otherwise, we both will have room service again.

I actually wanted to try Kampachi, tough I’ve tried many times in Penang, but this is something in KL that I’ve not try. Before I could suggest to hubby, I passed by The C Club, a place where I’ve read it some where, can’t recall whose blog and I was amazed with the food presentation and the services that they rendered to their customers.

Without 2nd thought hubby said let’s try this instead. So, we both walked up front and made the reservation.

Reservation made for 8pm, we were there 20mins early. The waitress brought us to our table and I believe that’s the supervisor whom came to us and checked with us how are us doing and so on. No wonder many bloggers commented that the service is in fact superb.

We both quite like the arrangement, and the table setting though they arranged for us to sit near the entrance.

The guy that came to us not long ago, he came again to check on us whether would we like to have a glass of wine or champagne. Since I can’t take any alcoholic I gave it a pass, hubby in fact have a glass of white wine.

So, the guy opened up the 2 bottles of mineral water that had put on the table. This is the only thing that I never like about them for not letting the customer know. Guess how much per bottle of this?? RM11 per bottle!!! Damn expensive mineral water that I ever drink before in my whole life. Mind you, this ain’t Evian mineral water, just The C Club brand name mineral water.

Ok, back to the food… before they served the soup, I was looking at the menu which placed on each table. And I realized there are 2 main entrée for each pax, and I thought it must be for us to select. But then, if I remember carefully, that’s the entire dinner arranged.

Well, didn’t care much, we were just enjoyed every moment that we have down here.

First, we were served Venus clam chowder with Victorian black mussel, cod brandade & torn tarragon.

Hot from the oven bread to either dip with olive oil and balsamic vinegar or butter.

Second that came along is the starter… and the starter is seriously gorgeous, and yummy!! Spiced duck rilletes topped with foie gras, frisee & port shallot reduction. What can I ask for more?? All the luxury food down on my plate for me on Christmas Eve!!

There are 2 main courses for the guests that night, first being served was Fruits & nuts stuffed chicken roulade, served with Brussels sprouts, carrots & giblets.

I didn’t really like it, but hubby enjoyed it very much. Probably I don’t like the fruits and nuts that accomplished with the chicken though it came along very well.

2nd main course is Pan seared Pompano tumbled on Yukon gold potatoes, asparagus, haricot verts & served with kalamata olive tapenade & basil oil. Don’t ask me what are those, seriously those are jargons to me. My eyes are on the food instead. [grin]

After the heavy main courses, here comes the dessert. Dessert is Rum raisin moist chocolate cake perched on assorted berries caramel, topped with semi freeze baileys cheese mousse.

The sugar is sharp and we’re told to be careful.

Every course to us is so fine and nicely presented. Just like the Mama Mia cast member says ‘Simply Gorgeous’!!

Per Pax: RM160++

Christmas' Gift from Westin KL

While I was in the bathroom dressing up for Christmas Eve dinner with hubby, suddenly I heard a door bell sound. Then hubby walked up and opened the door and caught by a surprise & a warm hospitality from the hotel.

We both have never expected this surprise from the hotel in fact.

This is something that the hotel thought for their guests who spent their Christmas out from their home.

So, what’s inside there?? A lollipop, fruit cake, cookies and a Santa Claus candy, isn’t it warmth and thoughtful of them?

I remember when I was small, dad brought us to KL for Christmas too, when the clock stroke 12am, all the cook from the kitchen marched out from the kitchen and have a bang on their wok, pots, and pans. That’s how they celebrated with their guests in their coffee house. Till today, I still remember it vividly.

Stay tune guys… I’ll have more to share after this.

Silk Road 丝绸之路

~~~ Happy New Year ~~~
Let me start the new year post with Silk Road.... Silk Road is a Singapore franchise eatery business, and was established in year 2001.
"It is a full-service restaurant concept featuring selective cuisines that stretch along the historical Silk Road in China namely the provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Liaoning and Beijing."
Hubby and I have been wandering in KL Pavilion for hours and also looking for some Chinese New Year clothes too… but when comes to eating time, I guess we are like any other shoppers, wondering what to eat.
Anyway, after we had done our last minute Christmas shopping in Parkson, hubby and I were looking into a restaurant where it enters from Parkson departmental stall. Since we both were still full, and we didn’t want to have anything too heavy before we proceed our Christmas Eve dinner for tonight, we both decided to give it a try.
We were served by a young lady and she explained to us that Silk Road is actually serves Sichuan Cuisine (四川菜), and most of their food are spicy and also oily. But after I surfed thru net, it actually serves combination of Beijing, Shaanxi, Liaoning and Sichuan food, which is correlate to the Silk Road Trade where we studied from history.
Anyway, let’s cut the crap, she introduced a couple of food to us, as we told her that we didn’t want anything heavy and something simple will do. Thus, we didn’t have anything fancy but something really ordinary like Sichuan Soup (四川酸辣湯), she said that would be appetizing for us, since both of us didn’t want anything filling.
Well, I’ve tried Sichuan Soup in Golden Phoenix in Equatorial Penang. And the taste compare to Silk Road, I guess I prefer the one in Golden Phoenix which I find that more authentic. As for the one from Silk Road, hubby and I find that they have put too much of pepper.
Oh ya, how could I forget this. Before our food were served, the lady also introduced us to have a cup of Eight Treasure Tea (八寶茶) that comprises of walnut, Chinese wolfberries, red dates, dried longan, Chinese tea leafs and other 2 treasures which I can’t recall what’s that.
An open pickle was served, bean curd and peanuts with five spices powder marinated. We both find it something unique.
Back to food, other than the soup, we have a plate of Sichuan Meat Dumpling in Chilli Oil (四川鐘水餃). Hubby likes it, but I find the dumpling skin is too thick. If they could make it thinner probably it isn’t that bad. Well, nothing to complain, after all, we want something simple.
When we were about to pay the bill, the girl came to us and wondering do we want some dessert. Hubby was saying since we’re already here, might as well try out.
To end this spectacular lunch I have a Double Boiled Ginseng Hashima (人參雪蛤), guess I don’t need to further explain what’s good for having this especially for elderly woman like me. By the way, can anyone tell me is it called Hashima or Hasma?
Hubby has something that they recommended, Sweet Glutinous Rice Ball (雨花石湯圓) which wrapped black sesame into it. Something simple and it’s one of Silk Road’s best selling dessert.
Silk Road is something unique for a try when you’re running out of idea what to have for meal.
